From Book 1: 1866
All across the country men are drifting home from the war. But when Tom Tanner musters out, he doesn’t plan to go home. He has been working in the brickyard in Springfield trying to save enough money to buy a rig and head west. He’s not expecting his father to show up and plead with him to return to the farm. After the horrible loss of his older brother, Tom doesn’t feel worthy of the family’s company. But his guilt won’t allow him to cause them more pain and so he goes home for one last visit. It’s hard to find normal around the folks. The work of harvest provides the perfect distraction. Once the crops are in he’ll go so far away they’ll never have to look at him again. But his plans are challenged one day. Tom is working in the field when the neighbor boy, Johnny, comes running for help. What Tom finds at the neighbor’s home is a scene right out of the war. But it’s not just about killing. The Missus Addie Varn, is ready to birth. Tom wants to run, and he will come fall, but now he must roll up his sleeves and play midwife.

Finding My Thunder

It’s young love. First love. It’s like thunder.

Danny moved closer and findingmythundercoverJPEGhe pressed his lips against mine. It only lasted for a few seconds, but when he pulled back he smiled at me. “I want to keep going,” he said.

I grabbed onto him and pulled him forward and rolled onto my back. I was looking at him and him at me and we weren’t laughing at all now, just breathing.

“You know I’m leaving,” he said.

“You run away from me. You always have.”

He shook his head and his hands gripped my shoulders hard. “You’re my only reason to stay.”

My Wounded Soldier by Diane Munier

icm_fullxfull.68038369_lva66fm4mj48cskcww04One day Tom lay in the field of battle with his brother Garrett. After the smoke cleared a white dove flew overhead. “That, Brother, is a sign,” Garrett said. “Peace will come.”

Garrett fell at Chickamauga. Tom lost the heart for going home. When he mustered out he went to work in a brickyard planning to save for a rig to go west. A man could lose himself under the big sky.

But his father came for him. His ma…she had already lost her firstborn.

So Tom came home one last time. Soon as harvest was in, he would go.

Then one day he was working in the field and a boy came. There was trouble. The boy’s ma…she killed a drifter. But not before he murdered the boy’s pa.

And the woman, the one who killed…well the baby was coming.

Some snippets of reviews:

By dpennell007

Drawn in from the first chapter, it was easy to see that this would be an adventure filled story, and I couldn’t wait to be along for the ride. I fell in love with the long suffering Tom Tanner – wearing his heart on his sleeve for everyone else to see but him. This little snippet of him feeling ignored cracked me up. “Well I was right here, wasn’t I? Faithful and true like always, burying the dead, delivering the children, drying the tears. So where did she think I was?” His Addie seemed fragile – however she proves to be anything but that as their relationship develops. Very enjoyable from start to finish.

This is my favorite Diane Munier novel by far. Even though I love her others and her style of writing, this book has my heart. Tom has been through so much and has so much pain and anger inside of him and Addie is the only soothing balm for him. Yet he keeps pushing her away! I want to kick his ass so bad! Lol he does finally wake up and the story that Diane tells to get there is amazing! Don’t miss this one!!

People read books for many reasons — to learn, to be entertained, to find comfort, to find one’s self, to escape. It is rare that one comes across a book that satisfies so many aspects of reading, but when that book is found, it is to be treasured, to be cherished. Such is the case with master storyteller Diane Munier’s epic work, My Wounded Solder: Part One: Fight for Glory.

The first in a two part series, My Wounded Soldier: Part One: Fight for Glory is set in the American Midwest, just after the end of the Civi War. A bloodied nation begins to mend, its citizens — soldiers and civilians alike — weary, wounded, if not by bullets then by sorrow. It is against this backdrop that we meet Tom Tanner – an ex-soldier, back to working his family’s farm, wounded in spirit, haunted by his actions on the battlefield, a hero to all but himself. One morning, he hears the panicked call for help by a young boy at a neighboring farm. And upon answering that call, Tom finds another bloodied battlefield, the only survivors the young boy and his now-widowed mother, Addie Varn. And it is here that Tom begins his journey of love, self-discovery, confession and redemption.

Written in a prose that is at times breathtaking, Diane Munier takes us into the heart and mind of Tom, struggling with his inner demons as he heads out to reclaim his life, spurred on by his steadfast love for Addie. In a time when adventure could be found around the next bend, and all a man required was a good horse and a steady aim, Munier keeps the action at an even, but rapid pace, reminiscent of a Larry McMurtry novel. Tanner’s voice is authentic, clear, purposeful — never wavering as he awakens from the numbness of his soul.

Get ready to enjoy a story by the first-rate story teller, Diane Munier. This story will transport the reader to another place and time and make the reader feel like they are right in the middle of the romance, the action scenes, the suspense, and the moving emotional times. The reader hears the thoughts of Tom Tanner and goes through his life’s journey with him.
Diane uses the most amazing descriptions and expressions from the post-Civil War era that capture the imagination as well as make the reader smile and burst out laughing, and other times make the reader hold their breath in anticipation or cry over moving events.
Tom Tanner is a man of action who gets things done and also a man with strong emotions and sentiments for his family and friends.
The storyline is fresh and interesting and holds the reader’s attention from beginning to end.
This is an outstanding historical romance on an epic scale. This will become an all time favorite for many readers.

My Wounded Soldier, Book Two: Fight for Love Is Live Today!!! In Celebration, Book One, Fight for Glory, is 99 Cents!!!

BOOK 1-aMy Wounded Soldier E-book CoverBook Two goes live today! To celebrate I am offering Book one at 99 cents.

I wrote the My Wounded Soldier series over twenty years ago. For the past fifteen years I have rewritten it numerous times. Uncountable times. On its long journey it has garnered several literary awards. But I kept hearing the main character, Tom Tanner’s voice. He kept speaking, telling me what it was like to come back to the farm after fighting in the war between states. He came home and fell in love. But his re-entry into normal life was not easy. When the glory trail rose up once more, who better than him to answer its call.

So I kept rewriting. My last effort, the current one, I rewrote without going back to the source material. Finally I broke free enough to know I had done the best I could. When I sent it to New York it caused quite a stir. When the publishing deal fell through due to a reshuffling in the big house I turned to self-publishing and left the many years of dashed hopes behind.

Tom Tanner is a man with something to say about his life…about yours. Step into this story and let him sweep you into his world. I am proud of this work. Hope you enjoy it.

Five Star Review for My Wounded Soldier, Fight for Love

Thanks to the Blog, Cowboys n’ Country and Liberty Ann Ireland for her review of My Wounded Soldier, Fight for Love.
She writes:
I love history almost as much as I love Cowboys. And my most favorite period in history to study, read about and learn about is the American Civil War.  Well you can believe I was totally doing the ‘Teacher Oooh Oooh Me!‘ when it came down to signing up for the opportunity to read and review this book and thankfully I was given the opportunity.  I’d never read any of Diane’s work before but as the subject matter really appealed, I was sure I would get on fine with the author.  That was a major understatement!
Diane is part historian, part Literary artist and part storyteller.  She gathers these multi-hued threads and weaves them together in a wonderful and fascinating way, one that keeps the readers rapt attention on both the threads and yet wondering what the end product will turn out to be.  Tom is her hero who, after returning a changed man from the war, was ready to settle down and love Addie for the rest of his days.  Now not only a new husband but an instant Pa to her young children, he wants and needs to become the amazing man and Pa his dad was.  It is 1866, the  year after the end of the war. He has determination, a fair amount of money he earned by re-upping and the abundant love of a very good woman by his side.  Hoping and praying, Tom steps into an uncertain future.  I love these characters.  I felt like I was in the story with them and they were my friends, maybe even my relatives.  Diane had an incredible gift to be able to create that feeling.
I truly cannot put into words in an adequate manner how this story affected me. It was broad and sweeping like the American landscape yet intimate enough to feel like home and family.  Diane’s wording is what does it.  It takes the mundane and makes it almost reverent.  And the lovemaking – for in this book it truly is – goes from the tender and loving to almost sublime and spiritual.  Truly a magnificent book, one I would recommend to all who love a good historical western romance!

Finding My Thunder

When we are raised by people who do not ask themselves the tough questions, who are so broken they can only anesthetize themselves from coming anywhere near their truth, and their voices become rage and an answering screeching howl in the family chorus then…we see the fragmented surface and the complete misses and half-truths that become their lives, their driving forces and…the protectors become the ones the child most needs protection from so…now we have a story like Finding My Thunder.

For the child must find…her voice.

A Portal to the Sixties! Darnay Road

Darnay Road CoverOne dear reader called this my Mockingbird. This story begins in the early sixties and continues into the seventies. It is told from the point of view of Georgia Christine, ten-year-old student of life. Georgia represents the innocence of those turbulent, often violent times. Even her beloved Darnay Road is not immuned to the darkness that hangs on the edges of her small and sheltered life. There are the tracks behind that separate Darnay from Scutter. Those boys that live over there, Easy and his brother, life isn’t as good for them. The way to the tracks is through the yard of a demented woman, but behind, well that’s where they found that body, torn in pieces, dragged that way by the train. Easy and his brother…that death separates them from the big houses on Darnay. Georgia calls her house Big White. She lives there with her Granma. Granma would as soon watch her stories as anything. But Georgia is loved. Easy…he’s the best boy that ever lived. And Georgia makes it her mission to help him out even when she’s not sure why he doesn’t want her crossing over…to his side. But solving mysteries, that’s what Georgia does. She is a full-fledged Darnay Spy. And Easy is her mission…and too soon…her heart.

5-Star Review:

At first blush, Darnay Road appears to be a nostalgic story chronicling a decade in the life of young Georgia Christine.

Set in the summer of 1963, innocent Georgia has become absorbed in the mysteries of life, religion and boys, not necessarily in that order. All too soon, she discovers that what she’s taken for concrete truths may be anything but true or concrete.

And as a nation awakens to the ugly reality of war and assassination, Georgia discovers her own voice, and with it her right to fight for her beliefs – whether it be the need to provide a home for a litter of orphaned kittens, or a home for an abandoned young man. Threaded throughout the story are Diane Munier’s trademark themes of the enduring power of unconditional love (a grandmother’s devotion to her motherless granddaughter), the power of passion (whether it be in a generation’s protest of an undeclared, futile war, or Georgia and Ethan, steadfast in their love), and the need for redemption (a young man offering up his life for his country in hope of mitigating his own sins).

More than a coming of age story, Darnay Road is a treasure map that leads its readers to love.
